Birtwistle East Lemes consists of 12 new bungalows on the upper part of the Carry Lane built for the Peter Birtwistle Trust which provides supported accommodation for elderly Colne residents. The new properties will form an extension to the existing bungalow scheme. The Trust was founded by millionaire jeweller Peter Birtwistle who emigrated to Canada and died in 1927, leaving his entire fortune to provide housing for the people of Colne.
